The Proposition is the 1998 story of a wealthy couple who will stop at nothing to have a child. Setting aside moral conscience and good sense, Arthur (William Hurt) and Eleanor Barret (Madeleine Stowe) hire a young man, Roger Martin (Neil Patrick Harris) to impregnate Mrs. Barret. Arthur has been trained to let nothing stand in the way of his dreams and goals, and he has achieved fame and power as a result. For Arthur, this is simply another business challenge. Unfortunately, Roger, who is a law student at Harvard, cannot separate his heart from the act and begins to fall in love with Eleanor. She is shocked and paralyzed and begins to wrestle with her own guilt. Unsure of where to turn, she goes to her priest, Father Michael McKinnon (Kenneth Branagh). Her life is only further complicated when it becomes clear that the priest is charmed with her as well.
