The Proud and the Profane is a romance film directed by George Seaton. The setting of the film is World War II-era Noumea, New Caledonia and follows the story of Lee Ashley (Deborah Kerr). Ashley is the widow of an officer who was killed during the Battle of Bloody Ridge on Guadalcanal. She is a volunteer with the American Red Cross, whose role in the war is to entertain and treat wounded soldiers. Ashley's secret motive in coming to the Pacific Ocean is to learn what she can about her husband's demise. Soon after her arrival in New Caledonia, Lt. Colonel Buck (William Holden) arrives and quickly falls in love with Ashley. Lt. Colonel Buck is known for his belief that certain groups of people, such as American Red Cross volunteers and army chaplains, are unessential and have no place in the war. His initial attempts to woo Ashley are spurned, but her disposition changes when Buck pretends to have information about her deceased husband.moreless
