The Proud Ones is a 1956 American Western film directed by Robert D. Webb and starring Robert Ryan, Virginia Mayo, and Jeffrey Hunter. In a small Kansas town, the residents begin to prepare for the arrival of the Texas trail herd. Marshal Cass Silver (Ryan) prepares for the worst, expecting the cattle drivers to be troublemaking boozehounds. Meanwhile Honest John Barrett (Robert Middleton), the town's saloon owner, eagerly anticipates the arrival of new customers. Barrett wants to rid the town of Silver, for he fears Silver will unjustly crack down on his business. Silver's deputy, Thad Anderson (Hunter), discovers that Silver is the gunman that shot and killed his father, and is therefore reluctant to help him in any way. When tensions come to a head, however, Anderson's loyalties play an important role in keeping peace in the town. When he discovers the truth about his father, he understands Silver's plight in protecting the town.
