The Proud Rebel follows former Confederate soldier John Chandler (Alan Ladd) as he searches for a doctor that can help his son David (David Ladd), who has been mute since he witnessed his mother die in a tragic fire. In Aberdeen, IL, Doc Enos Davis (Cecil Kellaway) believes the boy has suffered a psychological blow that is the root cause of his muteness and directs John to a doctor in Minnesota. Before John can gather provisions for the next leg of the journey, he finds himself at odds with local rancher Harry Burleigh (Dean Jagger). As the outsider, and a Southerner to boot, John finds little sympathy among the court and is facing 30 days in jail or a $30 fine when Linnett Moore (Olivia de Havilland) says he can repay the debt by working at her farm. As he works, Linnett and John form an attachment, but Linnett has trouble of her own. Harry wants her farm and he offers John the financial help he needs to get David to the doctor in exchange for his help in convincing Linnett to leave. Michael Curitz directed the 1958 film that is based on a story by James Edward Grant.moreless
