2004

The Punisher brings the comic book icon to life in this 2004 adaptation of the Marvel Comics series. Bobby Saint (James Carpinello), son of organized crime boss Howard Saint (John Travolta), is killed when an arms deal with gunrunner Otto Krieg is ambushed by the FBI. When the elder Saint investigates his son's death, he discovers the true identity of Otto Krieg - undercover agent Frank Castle (Thomas Jane). Newly retired after the firefight that took the life of Saint's son, Frank and his family attend a family reunion, where Saint's men lie in wait. The resulting backlash ends with Frank's entire family dead, and leaving him barely clinging to life. Now, he must survive an onslaught of attempts on his life while doing his best to bring the man responsible for killing his family to justice. Frank Castle's justice, however, begins at the end of a gun barrel. When Howard Saint murdered his family, a part of himself died that night. He no longer calls himself Frank Castle; he now fights any and all crime as the The Punisher.moreless

Metacritic Score

  • 60

    Los Angeles Times Kenneth Turan

That rare comic book movie that actually feels like a comic book. Which turns out to be mostly, but not entirely, a good thing.

  • 40

    Variety Joe Leydon

Fires blanks. Thoroughly routine, pic plays like a paint-by-numbers pilot for bygone basic-cable teleseries.

  • 30

The New York Times Dana Stevens

Its lack of subtlety is clearly a point of pride, and Mr. Hensleigh's flat-footed, hard-punching style has a blunt ferocity that makes "Kill Bill" look like "In the Bedroom."
