Movie Summary

Director:
Woody Allen
Released:
1985
Rating:
PG
The Purple Rose of Cairo is an American romantic comedy that depicts the life of a woman, Cecilia (Mia Farrow), who is in an abusive marriage and stuck working for a job that has no room for promotion. Being very fond of cinema, she watches a movie called The Purple Rose of Cairo and falls in love with the male protagonist, Tom Baxter (Jeff Daniels). Things turn somewhat bizzare however, when he manifests himself out of the television and begins a relationship with Cecilia. The setting of this Woody Allen film is New Jersey around the time of the Great Depression. This bittersweet comedy is limitless in its appeal and charm. The Purple Rose of Cairo blurs the boundaries between real life and the metaphysical by probing the boundaries of the human psyche. Other notable cast and characters include Henry (Edward Herrmann), the countess (Zoe Caldwell) and Kitty Haynes (Karen Akers).
