The Quiet Room is a 1996 drama that sheds light on the impact of a dissolving marriage through the eyes of a seven-year old girl. The young girl (who is nameless), played by Chloe Ferguson, is shown throughout the film continually dissolving into herself as her mother (Celine O'Leary) and father (Paul Blackwell) go back and forth between arguments and raising levels of animosity. The viewer is able to hear the thoughts of the girl as she narrates them throughout and it becomes clear that she feels her parents are beginning to act more selfishly and childishly than she is herself. The only way to escape the madness is for her to escape to her own fantasy land. In this case, it is her room, where she can smile at the colorful walls, play with her Barbies and finally find a place where everyone has joy. The contrast between the immature mind of the girl living in the house and her parents' petty squabbling show the impact of adult actions in the mind of a young bystander. Dutchman Rolf De Heer served as the director and Ferguson, who played the lead character, is actually his own daughter.moreless
