The Radicals is a religious drama directed by Raul V. Carrera and released in 1990. Based on a true story, the movie details the rise of the Anabaptist movement and its struggle against the rigidity of state-approved religion in the 16th century. Michael (Norbert Weisser), a disillusioned monk, teams up with Margaretha (Leigh Lombardi), a disheartened nun, to help change the prevalent attitude of keeping the poor powerless through heavy taxation and religious servitude. The couple marry and join the Anabaptists, a developing religion based upon the decision to choose to be baptized as an adult, which was contrary to the Catholic faith and viewed as heresy at the time. The Anabaptists, lead by Hoffman (Mark Lenard), clash with state and church officials as they spread their message of freedom and choice. Within the confines of 16th century law, can Michael and Margaretha help to change society for the better, or will their enemies destroy the Anabaptist movement before it takes hold?moreless
