The Ransom of Red Chief is a film adaptation of the classic story penned by O. Henry. Bill Driscoll (Michael Jester) and Sam Howard (Christopher Lloyd) are fugitives from the deep south looking for an easy two grand to invest in a con job. They put their heads together and hatch a scheme to kidnap the child of a wealthy family and hold the child for ransom. Believing the residents of the rural south to strongly value familial bonds, they set their sights on the small town of Summit, Alabama. The pair of bumbling crooks manage to make off with the son of Ambrose Dorset (Alan Ruck), an important figure in Summit. The kidnappers think they are in the clear and make their way to a hidden hideout in the hills surrounding Summit to await the ransom. Things are not so easy for the two when Andy, who calls himself Red Chief, turns out to be a handful. After a series of pranks, games, and mischief, the pair begin to think that they should be paying Ambrose to take back his redheaded menace.
