Refuge is a 2003 drama directed by Nigel Barker that tells the story of two Kurdish male refugees, Mahmoud (Nabil Elouahabi) and Rezghar (Fuman Dar), who escaped from tyranny and persecution in Northern Iraq. They manage to arrive in London, UK, hiding on a merchandise train, and begin to look for ways to start a new life. The men request political asylum, but they soon realize that the government bureaucracy is not going to help them. Being forced to return to their home country, they hide from police in a church where Father Michael (David Bradley) is offering them temporary shelter. Sensitive to people's needs and injustice, Father Michael risks his own career protecting the refugees from the authorities who threaten the men with jail and immediate deportation to Iraq. As going back to a land of terror and torture is not an option, Mahmoud and Rezghar are hoping for a miracle. Amidst increasing pressure from police, his own superiors and angry community members, the priest tries hard to maintain the integrity of his beliefs and keeps fighting for their safety.moreless
