The Replacement Killers is an Antoine Fuqua action film starring Chow Yun-Fat and Miro Sorvino about a Chinese hitman who becomes a target of the Chinese Triad after he refuses to complete a mission. John Lee (Yun-Fat) is a talented and accomplished killer with plenty of blood on his hands. When Wei, a Triad boss played by Kenneth Tsang, hires him to kill a 7-year-old kid, John finds his conscience won't allow him to finish the job. When he declines the assignment, the gangsters target John's own family back in China. Now John has to find a way to protect himself, the 7-year-old kid, and his distant family all at the same time. Sorvino plays Meg Coburn, a forger who gets caught up in John's disaster after he asks her to make him a passport. With skilled assassins out to kill them both, John and Meg will have to fight and outsmart their opponents if they want to survive. The Replacement Killers is Antoine Fuqua's directorial debut, as well as Chow-Yun Fat's debut in American cinema.

Metacritic Score

  • 75

    Chicago Sun-Times Roger Ebert

It's a high-gloss version of a Hong Kong action picture, made in America but observing the exuberance of a genre where surfaces are everything.

  • 60

The New York Times Stephen Holden

The movie they have concocted has the feel of a visual sampler or an elaborate color swatch submitted for a design that remains largely unexecuted.

  • 50

    Variety

This mechanical effort is studied rather than heartfelt and will disappoint aficionados and thwart potential fans.
