The Republic of Love is a 2003 Canadian romantic comedy/drama. It was directed by Deepa Mehta and was based on the novel of the same name written by Pulitzer Prize-winner Carol Shields. Tom Avery (Bruce Greenwood) is a charismatic talk show host on a late-night radio program who has a tendency to fall in love hard and fast, leading him to be a three-times divorced single man by the age of 40. Fay (Emilia Fox) is the exact opposite: Her parents' seemingly perfect marriage has given her something to strive for, and she won't give up until she finds someone who meets her high expectations. Unfortunately, her current boyfriend isn't living up to those expectations. She meets Tom and everything changes. They fall in love with one another almost immediately and quickly learn to support each other and accept each other unconditionally. Things look great until Fay's parents' "perfect" marriage crumbles after 40 years. Fay feels insecure and unsure of her own relationship, leaving Tom to prove to her that they are meant for each other any way he has to.moreless
