The film portrays a dystopian future, taking place in the year 2019 where America has become a police state with heavy censorship and government control over the media. The government uses television to entertain the masses, with the most popular series being "The Running Man." In this sadistic game show, convicted criminals are filmed as they try to escape from deadly assassins. Ben Richards, a man wrongfully accused of murder who is forced into competing on the deadly show, along with two of his friends, Richards struggles to survive the professional and well-armed killers sent after him, while at the same time attempting to communicate to the world the truth of his innocence and expose the government's corruption.
