The Saint of Fort Washington is about two men trapped in poverty and homelessness. After his brother gambles away their business, Jerry (Danny Glover) finds himself on the streets. Meanwhile Matthew (Matt Dillon), young, schizophrenic and on his own, is evicted when his apartment building is torn down by a slumlord. The two end up at the Fort Washington Shelter For Men, where they are constantly threatened by a thug, Little Laroy (Ving Rhames). Jerry, a combat veteran, takes Matthew in hand, and the two are forced ever closer as the world seems against them. Filmed on location in New York, the movie dwells on themes of loneliness, despair and poverty as these two men try to climb out of the pit of homelessness. They set a simple goal, to rent an apartment and start their own business, but can they achieve it? Or will they be forever trapped in Fort Washington, where crime is the only way of life that seems profitable?
