THE SAVAGES is a 25 minute long short documentary that was shot in Venice, Califfornia in 1967. It was written, directed and produced by Alan Gorg. It was shot in the African American ghetto called Ghost Town. The documentary shows the troubles and problems of being trapped within this ghetto and how it leads to so many of its youth failing in society. The entire audio track to the film is taken from interviews with the young people living within the ghetto and is used without any interjections or further audio discussion from the director. The documentary shows these lost young men, abandoned by society and without jobs, as they turn to guns and cheap wine which leads to prison or death. Looming over all this is the shadow of crack cocaine, which would soon arrive into the ghetto, further decimating the population into the next generation. The documentary won first prize for best documentary at the 1968 Mercer College International Film Competition.moreless
