The Scarlet Letter is a 1995 adaptation of Nathaniel Hawthorne's classic novel directed by Roland Joffe. The film tells the tale of a forbidden love in the harsh and unforgiving Puritan society of colonial America. Hester (Demi Moore) arrives to the Massachusetts Bay Colony without her husband, Chillingworth (Robert Duvall), and she needs to establish a home for herself. During her time alone, she finds herself falling in love with a young minister named Reverend Dimmesdale (Gary Oldman). Time passes, and when news spreads of her husband's death, Hester and Dimmesdale have a secret love affair that produces a child. The reports of Chillingworth's death turn out to be false, and he arrives to the colony in hopes of seeking revenge on his adulterous wife and the man who fathered her child. Dimmesdale suffers from private guilt and shame over his sin, and the Puritans of the colony brand Hester with a symbolic letter "A" to permanently identify her as an adulterer. As rumors of witchcraft consume the colony, Hester must find a way to keep her child safe from an oppressive society and her vengeful husband.moreless
