The Sea Inside (also known as Mar Adentro) is a 2004 Spanish film starring Academy Award-winner Javier Bardem in a story about one man's quest for a dignified death and the two women he inspired along the way. Bardem plays Ramon Sampedro, a Galician man who worked as a ship mechanic up until a terrible diving accident left him paralyzed from the neck down. Sampedro was a passionate and proud man, and after the accident he desired to end his life and escape from his immobile body. Over the next three decades, Sampedro fought for his right to die peacefully and on his own terms. Along the way, Sampedro became close with two women. Belen Rueda plays Julia, a lawyer who supports Sampedro's choice to voluntarily end his life. Lola Duenas plays Rosa, a woman inspired by Sampedro's compassion who wants to convince him that life is worth living.
