The Second City: First Family of Comedy is a documentary that highlights over 40 years of comedy, coming out of the old-town Chicago theater group. Director Sharon Bartlett takes a look back at The Second City and its academy/training center where many famous American comedians learned their craft. The film opens with a clip from a stand-up routine from Joan Rivers in 1961. It then highlights some live performances of important Second City Chicago Alumni by first cutting to a young John Belushi on stage in 1971. Bill Murray and Dan Aykroyd stop by Sharon's studios for an interview, and after, the film segues to a 1975 performance of Gilda Radner and John Candy at the Improv in New York. Mike Myers talks about his Second City training in Toronto and how he shared the classroom with Tina Fey and Chris Farley. Sharon visits the set of Saturday Night Live to talk to producer, Lorene Michaels about why so many Second City actors end up on his live, late-night TV show. While on set, SNL guest Steve Carell sets up a little surprise for the director.moreless
