The Secret Life of Words follows Hanna (Sarah Polley), a torture survivor from the Bosnian conflict. Due to suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder, compulsive behavior, and impaired hearing, Hanna has to undergo counseling from Inge (Julie Christie). Traumatized from her experiences, Hanna lives her life completely alone. She attends work every day, taking no sick leave or holidays. When she is directed to take a holiday by the union, she goes to a seacoast village and overhears an oil company manager discussing the need for a live-in nurse for a burned oil platform worker on site in the North Sea. Trained as a burn victim nurse, she volunteers to help. Her patient Josef (Tim Robbins) is temporarily blind and has face and arm burns from fighting a rig fire. Both characters are victims of trauma but relate to each other with their survival stories. The Secret Life of Words is a moving love story that's beautifully done with unforgettable character development.moreless

Extremely sensitive mysterious drama, International co-production where Sarah Polley shines, Isabel Coixet as usual displays her solid directing talent, Tim Robbins doesn't bring much unfortunately, and Julie Christie steals the show in (only) 10 minutes or less of screen time! Recommended for lovers of serious filmmaking!
