The Secrets is a gripping dramatic film about a young Jewish woman that finds a separate path than the one her rabbi father wants for her. Noemi (Ania Bukstein) is a young, studious, and very intelligent daughter of a notable, very orthodox rabbi. Though he loves her dearly, her father is continually disappointed in Noemi, as she has not learned what he considers the most important lesson he could teach, to be a submissive woman. In line to marry her father's prodigy, Noemi begs to postpone the wedding for a year, so that she may study at a Jewish seminary for women in Safed. There she meets Michelle (Michal Shtamler), a similarly headstrong girl who is not conflicted at all about her beliefs, having no interest in submitting to a man. As their relationship begins to grow, an attraction develops, drawing Noemi further from her father's beliefs. But when they encounter Anouk, (Fanny Ardant) an older woman who has just been released from prison for murder, her eyes open even more to the hypocritical teachings in which she was raised, and finds herself at a conflict between who she truly is and who her father expects her to be. Avi Nesher directs this riveting drama about finding yourself.moreless
