The Seventh Seal is a 1957 Swedish film from acclaimed director Ingmar Bergman that stars Max von Sydow as Antonius Block, a Swedish knight who plays a game of chess with Death (Bengt Ekerot) when Death comes to take his life. Antonius Block is a powerful warrior who returns from a Crusade, only to find his country ravished and destroyed by the onslaught of the Black Death. Block then begins to grapple with the meaning of life and death, a struggle that is physically represented by a chess game he plays with the figure of death, who has come to claim his life. This is the first film in Ingmar Bergman's "faith cycle," four films that explore changing perceptions of God and Bergman's own disillusionment with the Christian faith. This film launched Bergman into international stardom, and it contains many iconic scenes that are still often recognized and parodied today. The Seventh Seal is a classic film about humanity's struggle with death and our relationship with God.moreless
