The Shining is the 1980 epic horror film directed by the legendary Stanley Kubrick from the bestselling novel by horror king Stephen King. Produced under lavish conditions, the film stars Jack Nicholson (One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Chinatown) as Jack Torrance, a troubled, former schoolteacher/alcoholic writer who has just secured a job taking care of the labyrinthine Overlook Hotel in the Colorado Rockies for the winter, who brings his family along to accompany him on the journey, which is made up of his wife Wendy (Shelley Duvall) and son Danny. But upon arriving at the breathtaking place, he is informed of its decidedly checkered past, capped by the mental breakdown and murder spree of its previous caretaker. Jack takes the news in stride and vows to do his best with the task with which he's been charged. But with the onset of the winter, so comes the onset of strange supernatural activity within the hotel's walls. To make matters worse, Jack's son Danny possesses a rather unique gift ' that of precognition or 'shining' ' which gets the guests into some of the most terrifying situations in film history.moreless

Meticulously detailed and never less than fascinating, The Shining may be the first movie that ever made its audience jump with a title that simply says "Tuesday."

The crazier Nicholson gets, the more idiotic he looks. Shelley Duvall transforms the warm sympathetic wife of the book into a simpering, semi-retarded hysteric.
