The Shipping News is a 2001 drama from director Lasse Hallstrom that stars Kevin Spacey, Julianne Moore, Judi Dench, and Cate Blanchett in a film based on the Pulitzer Prize winning novel of the same name by E. Annie Proulx. Spacey plays Quoyle, a second-generation American whose father emigrated to New York from Newfoundland. Quoyle is middle-aged when his life begins falling apart around him. First, his parents commit suicide. Next, his cheating and deranged wife Petal (Blanchett) attempts to kidnap their daughter and sell the girl into adoption. While escaping the city, Petal is killed in a car accident, and their daughter is returned home to Quoyle. However, Quoyle is in shambles, completely lost in life with no direction. Quoyle's aunt, Agnis Hamm (Dench), suggests they move back to Newfoundland and try to leave all these tragedies behind. Quoyle uproots his wrecked life and returns to the home of his ancestors, taking a job as a reporter and slowly building a new life for his family.moreless
