The Shootist is a western drama, released in 1976 and directed by Don Siegel. In the movie, the feisty, gun-slinging John Bernard Books (John Wayne) is given a terminal diagnosis. As Books begins to accept this diagnosis, he determines he will need a place to stay while he is dying. He rents a room from a recently widowed innkeeper, Bond Rogers (Lauren Bacall), to live out his terminal disease. At the inn, Rogers' young son, Gillom (Ron Howard), becomes very attached to the ailing Books. With Bond and Gillom looking on Books' terminal diagnosis begins to progress and Books determines that he will be the one to decide when he dies. With that decision and literally nothing else to live for, Books musters the little strength he has left to take care of some unfinished business. Longtime fans of John Wayne will notice the parallel between this western and the real events of John Wayne's life when it was filmed.
