The Siege of Firebase Gloria is a story of conflict in Vietnam that chronicles the rescue and defense of a military base by a Force Recon unit of the United States Marine Corps in the midst of the Tet Offensive. The band of fighters is led by Sergeant Major Bill Hafner (R. Lee Ermey), who is in a constant state of turmoil due to the gruesomeness of battle and attempting to maintain morale in spite of it. Aiding Hafner through the fray is his trusted corporal, Di Nardo (Wings Hauser), whose battle-hardened and stern exterior betrays a hidden element of gentle humanity that is often pushed aside in order to face the ordeal at hand. The film also takes a rare and empathetic look at the point of view of the opposing Viet Cong guerrillas, who are determined to fight until death to stave off the invading forces. Due to its realistic and gritty portrayal of the horrors of war, this film has gained a cult following and is recommended for its frank depiction of the struggle for survival in which the winner is not necessarily the victor.moreless
