The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, based on the novel by Ann Brashares, chronicles a special summer in the lives of best friends Tibby Tomko-Rollins (Amber Tamblyn), Lena Kaligaris (Alexis Bledel), Carmen Lowell (America Ferrera), and Bridget Vreeland (Blake Lively), who have spent every one of their summers together and are facing separation for the first time. While shopping, they discover a magical pair of jeans in a thrift shop that fits each of them perfectly, even though they have very different body shapes. They decide that each should wear the magic jeans for one week and then send the pants to the next girl, as a way to connect throughout the summer. They write a manifesto and form a sisterhood, vowing to share their adventures and see what kind of luck the pants will bring. Although they travel to very different places, they are able to share their experiences of love, life, and loss, making their friendship stronger and more enduring than ever.moreless

Metacritic Score

  • 70

The New York Times Lawrence Van Gelder

Of these four plots, the story of Carmen's blended family is by far the most consistently engaging, largely because of the vibrant presence of Ms. Ferrera.

  • 70

    Los Angeles Times Carina Chocano

Has its share of summery charms, including gorgeous postcard views of Santorini, an old-worldy Romeo-Juliet romance, and some particularly good performances by Tamblyn and Boyd.

  • 70

    Variety Dennis Harvey

Mixes satisfying dollops of fun, tears, travel, romance and lesson-learning in a handsome package whose two hours pass faster than many a grownup entertainment.
