The Sky is Gray is a 1980 drama directed by Stan Lathan and based on a short story by Earnest J. Gaines. In Louisiana in the 1940s, young James (James Bond III) grows up in a relatively sheltered way. He loves his family, including his mother (Olivia Cole), but life is difficult for his family as they work on their plantation. Every single cent matters to them since it is won through constant, difficult work. When James develops a toothache and the pain grows unbearable, James knows that his family cannot afford medical attention. He valiantly tries to hide the toothache, but they soon notice his discomfort. At first, the family seeks the help of a spiritual neighbor (Cleavon Little), but James's mother finally decides that they need to head into town and seek the help of a dentist. Once they are in town, James starts to see the world and his place in it more clearly, leading to some startling conclusions about race relations.moreless
