The Snake Pit is a 1948 film starring Olivia de Havilland in her Oscar nominated role. This film tells the story of Virginia Cunningham, a woman who wakes up in a mental institution without any memory of how she arrived there. Virginia is quite distraught and cannot even remember her own husband's face. She eventually meets Dr. Kik (Leo Genn), a psychiatrist who spends many hours helping Virginia uncover her mysterious past. Through many sessions, Virginia begins to remember her illusive past and the strange circumstances that brought her here. The film is told mostly through the uses of flashback sequences. These sequences show the blossoming relationship between Virginia and her husband, the slightly erratic actions Virginia begins to engage in, and eventually her mental breakdown. Throughout the movie, the flashback sequences are interwoven perfectly with real-time scenes. These seemless transitions allow for a wonderfully complex story to be told without spoiling any of the surprises. The Snake Pit is definitely worth a watch.
