The Son is a 2002 mystery drama directed by Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne. In the film, Olivier (Olivier Gourmet) is a carpentry teacher at a vocational school for "at risk" teenage boys in Liege. A tragedy in his past destroyed his marriage, and he has just learned that his ex-wife, Magali (Isabella Soupart), is pregnant and planning to remarry. On this same day, Olivier is asked to allow a 16-year-old new boy, Francis (Morgan Marinne), to enter his program and he immediately refuses. As soon as Olivier is available, he anxiously begins to stalk the boy around the school, he even spies on him in the school office. After a short time of following Francis, Olivier abruptly changes his mind and allows the boy into his program. The teacher knows who this boy is and he desperately wants to get close to him. What is the connection between Olivier and Francis that the boy is unaware of?

There are all sorts of ways to look at The Son -- as a philosophical thriller, as a statement of faith, as a call to political arms or just as a terrific entertainment.
