The Sorcerer's Apprentice is a 2010 fantasy adventure starring Nicolas Cage as a master sorcerer. Once the apprentice of Merlin (James A. Stephens), Balthazar Blake (Nicolas Cage) has the responsibility of safeguarding a container that holds the world's worst wizards imprisoned. His nemesis, Maxim Horvath (Alfred Molina), also schooled under Merlin, but has turned evil and now wants to release the evil into modern-day Manhattan for his amusement. Balthazar recruits the unlikely Dave Stutler (Jay Baruchel), a NYU physics student, as his prot''g'' and immediately begins Dave's instruction in battling the forces of evil. Dave would actually rather use the magical powers to help him in his quest for co-ed Becky Barnes (Teresa Palmer). Although Balthazar insists that Dave has hidden potential, the student may succumb to his own inept magic before he can be a useful threat to Maxim. Jon Turteltaub ("National Treasure") directs this comic and magical adventure using plenty of New York City landmarks as a backdrop to the fierce battle between wizards.moreless

Metacritic Score

  • 63

    Chicago Sun-Times Roger Ebert

The Sorcerer's Apprentice is a perfectly typical example of its type, professionally made and competently acted.

  • 50

The New York Times A.O. Scott

While Mr. Molina and Mr. Cage supply a measure of well-compensated eccentricity, their labors ultimately serve to emphasize the grinding mediocrity of the enterprise.

  • 40

    Variety Justin Chang

The magic here feels machine-made and depressingly state-of-the-art.
