The Spanish Prisoner is a complex story of deception about a young corporate businessman who develops a revolutionary way to make money. Joe Ross (Campbell Scott) has just figured out a remarkable new way to increase his company's financial gain, a ground breaking new technological advancement called "The Process." Ross expects to be compensated handsomely for his new invention, but the higher ups do not indicate any kind of financial gain is in store for him. At a corporate retreat in the Caribbean, Ross meets the notably rich Jimmy Dell (Steve Martin) and his secretary Susan Ricci (Rebecca Pidgeon), who begin persuading him not to let the company have the idea, and to guard his valuable secret very carefully. Ross returns to New York with a new found reluctance to let go of The Process, leading to a world full of twists and turns, where nothing is what it seems and everyone is fighting to get their hands on it. The renowned David Mamet writes and directs The Spanish Prisoner, a thrilling mystery that unravels amongst impeccable performances and one of a kind dialogue.moreless

  • 100

The New York Times Elvis Mitchell

This is his sleekest and most engaging film thus far. If you like a good cat-and-mouse game with a keen ear for language, then go.

    Variety

The picture is a devilishly clever series of reversals that keeps you guessing to the very end.

  • 70

    Los Angeles Times Kenneth Turan

The Spanish Prisoner is the smoothest and most convincing of Mamet's elaborate charades and features intriguing performances by Steve Martin and Campbell Scott.
