Movie Summary

Director:
Frank Miller
Released:
2008
Rating:
PG-13
The Spirit portrays an engaging story of a superhero based on a Will Eisner newspaper comic strip carrying the same name. Like every good superhero story, our protagonist is motivated by a strong emotional event that leads him to seek revenge and use every resource available, including super abilities, to get it. Denny Colt (Gabriel Macht) is a rookie police officer in a crime-ridden city that tragically dies in a gun battle with a local gangster. The grave could not keep this hero down, however, as fate raises him from the dead to become The Spirit. Our hero runs into a slew of foes along his journey of revenge, ranging from beautiful and seductive women like Sand Saref (Eva Mendes) and Silken Floss (Scarlett Johansson) to a formidable nemesis known as Octopus (Samuel L. Jackson). As the plot progresses, it is revealed that one of these wrong-doers has intentions to destroy the entire city. The fate of thousands is left in the capable hands of the mysterious masked man known only as The Spirit.moreless

What is most striking about The Spirit is how little pleasure it affords, in spite of its efforts to by sly, sexy, heartfelt and clever all at once.

Miller's flat, humorless yarn is set in Central City, a vacant metropolis whose only residents seem to be cops and crooks.

    Variety Justin Chang

Plunges into a watery grave early on and spends roughly the next 100 minutes gasping for air.
