The Stepford Wives is a 1975 suspense thriller about a group of women who project an "ideal" model for the suburban mom, only to reveal a horrifying surprise. Directed by Ira Levin, the movie begins with Joanna (Katherine Ross) and husband Walter (Peter Masterson) moving to the community of Stepford, Connecticut -- a town known for its hospitality and good manners. With their children in tow, the family moves in to their home when Joanna begins to realize some unusual behavior coming from the other housewives. In particular, a woman named Carol (Nannette Newman) who she finds unusually cheerful and trivial, almost to the point of being obnoxious. Joanna does find one woman named Bobby (Paula Prentiss) who rejects the town's status quo by never catering to her husband and avoiding all housework. Joanna soon becomes friends with Bobby, but just as quickly, she begins to see her new friend morphing into the similar cheerful version of the other women. Joanna finally decides to do some investigating and unearths a secret that includes an ongoing plot by the husbands of the community to use scientific research to create their own versions of the perfect wife.moreless
