Movie: The Stepford Wives

Movie Summary

The Stepford Wives is a dark comedic film directed by Frank Oz based on the Ira Levin novel of the same name that centers on a harried woman who begins to discover the dark secrets of her idyllic Connecticut town. Joanna Eberhart (Nicole Kidman) had been a successful TV executive, producing a number of high-ranking reality shows, but when one of the male contestants goes on a shooting spree, Joanna finds herself on the verge of a nervous breakdown. In a bid for peace and quiet, she and her husband Water (Matthew Broderick) move to Stepford, an almost perfect Connecticut suburb where the wives are eerily similar and life is ideal. While Walter and her kids love Stepford, Joanna's skeptical and caustic nature separates her from the other cookie cutter wives and draws her into a friendship with Bobbie Markowitz (Bette Midler), a recovering alcoholic writer, and Roger Bannister (Roger Bart), a flamboyant gay man who moved to Stepford to be closer to his politics-aspiring partner. The three begin to take an investigative eye to the town, especially when they discover that all the happy wives had once been powerful women outside Stepford. Can Joanna discover just what has happened to the wives in Stepford before she is pulled into the fold?moreless
