The Stone Boy is a 1984 drama directed by Christopher Cain and written by Gina Berriault. For the most part, the Hillermans are a happy, contented family, living on a modest farm in Montana. Joe (Robert Duvall) and Ruth (Glenn Close) try to be good parents to their three children, including their oldest son, Eugene (Dean Cain), their daughter Nora (Susan Rinell) and their 12-year-old son Arnold (Jason Presson). One morning, the two brothers decide to head out to pick peas and hunt for wild ducks. Eugene and Arnold are both in a good mood as they leave home. As the brothers attempt to climb over a fence, however, Arnold's gun accidentally fires. The bullet finds Eugene, killing him immediately. Arnold is so stunned by the event that he just goes on with his day as usual, picking peas and then returning home to the rest of his family. The Hillermans are both grief-stricken by the loss of their oldest son and confused by the strange reaction of their youngest son. Everyone must come to terms with their grief and learn how to forgive Arnold and each other.moreless
