The Story of Qiu Ju is a Chinese drama that was released in 1992. Qiu Ju (Li Gong) is a peasant who lives in a small farming village with her husband Qinglai (Peiqi Liu), his sister and their father. During a talk with the village chief, Wang Shantang (Kesheng Lei), Qinglai makes a comment that is mistaken for an insult and the chief proceeds beat Qinglai so severely that he is forced to see a doctor and is unable to work for a while. Even though she is in her last months of pregnancy, Qiu Ju tries to find justice for her injured husband by working her way up the law enforcement and political ranks. Funding her travels by selling dried hot peppers, Qiu Ju and her sister-in-law are determined to find restitution for Qinglai. Each new city provides an insight into the differences between life as a peasant and life within a Chinese city.
