The Suburbans is a 1999 drama by director Donal Lardner Ward, starring Jennifer Love Hewitt, Donal Lardner Ward, Amy Brenneman, Tony Guma, Craig Bierko, and Will Ferrell. In this star-filled film, Danny (Donal Lardner Ward), Mitch (Craig Bierko), Gil (Will Ferrel), and Rory (Tony Guma) are the members of the long forgotten, 80’s one-hit wonder band The Suburbans, who reunite to perform their only hit single at one of the wedding of one of the band members. When an up-and-coming record company executive in the audience, Cate (Jennifer Love Hewitt), offers the group the chance to get back in the spotlight through a pay-per-view reunion show, contrasting their middle class, suburban lifestyles with their old rock-n-roll image, they jump at the opportunity. But is Cate their only remaining fan? The Suburbans was considered a commercial failure after grossing only $11,130 in its first year, but with its talented cast, the film may be worth giving a shot anyway.

Metacritic Score

  • 40

    The New York Times

It's cute and jokey and has no particular edge.

  • 30

    Los Angeles Times Gene Seymour

Goes into a tailspin after its impressive setup. Its dramatic tactics become so tangled and diffuse that, by the end, you get the feeling that everything gets tied up too hastily.

  • 30

    Variety Dennis Harvey

A mediocre ensemble comedy-drama that's not particularly funny, involving or even nostalgic.
