The Sum of Us is a poignant comedic film about an unexpected conflict between a father and his gay son. Jeff Mitchell (Russell Crowe) is an openly homosexual man in his early 20s, living in Sydney with his father Harry (Jack Thompson), some time after the death of his mother. Having only experienced wholehearted acceptance from his father, Jeff longs to find the right relationship, a search Harry can certainly understand and relate to. But Jeff finds himself in an awkward situation when he brings home Greg (John Polson) for the night; his prospective lover can not understand or handle the lack of judgement from Harry, something he is all too used to in his family. While a sever tragedy is averted, the complicated scene is repeated in an all too familiar way when Harry has divorcee Joyce (Deborah Kennedy) as a house guest, as her prejudices are center stage. Geoff Burton and Kevin Dowling direct this refreshing look at adult relationships, fear, and homophobia.moreless
