The Surge is a 2002 science-fiction thriller directed by Steve Taylor and alternately known as The Source. Reese Hauser (Mathew Scollon) comes to his new school already knowing that he will not fit in. Although he is teased and bullied, Reese unexpectedly makes a small group of friends. Zack Bainbridge (Edward DeRuiter) considers himself a nerd. To him, Reese seems interesting, not weird. Reese also makes friends with Zack's bitingly witty and rebellious sister, Ashley (Melissa Reneé Martin), and their high-maintenance but good-hearted friend, Phoebe (Alice Frank). The four are happy to have each other, but they still expect that their high school years will be miserable. When Zack stumbles across a strange portal in the forest, he is excited by its possibilities as a scientific discovery. When Reese, Ashley, Phoebe and Zack get too near the portal, however, they find their bodies and minds changing in unexpected ways. Each of them gains superpowers. As the rest of the students catch on, the four friends shoot from the bottom of the ladder to the top of the food chain. Too much power might wind up hurting them more than it helps.moreless
