The Swimmer is a 1968 drama starring Burt Lancaster based on a short story of the same name written by American author John Cheever. Produced and directed by Frank Perry, and featuring original music by Marvin Hamlisch, the film tells the story of Neddy Merrill (Burt Lancaster). Neddy Merrill is a New York, Park Avenue executive who married into money and lives a self-serving, self-centered, philandering life in a wealthy suburban community in Connecticut. Neddy has been absent from his social scene for a long time, and the film takes place over the course of the first day Neddy reappears to talk with his friends. The length of his absence and where he was during his absence remains a mystery throughout the movie. The only thing that is certain is that Ned has had a psychological breakdown and has lost the last two years of his memory. The movie becomes increasingly surreal as Neddy notices a series of swimming pools spanning throughout the entire county and decides to get home by swimming across all of the pools.
