The Tale of Despereaux is a film based on the Newberry Award Wining book of the same name by Kate de Camillo. The 2008 film is computer animated, with narration by Sigourney Weaver, and actors providing voices. Despereaux (Matthew Broderick) is a mouse who is not getting along with his family. His ideas are too lofty, he wants to be a knight and save a kingdom. He also broke the law by being friends with a human, Princess Pea (Emma Watson). Despereaux's family decides they've had enough of his misdeeds and send him to the dungeon. In the dungeon he meets Rosco (Dustin Hoffman), a rat who is responsible for killing a queen. While in the dungeon, Despereaux tells Roscuro about his human friend, the sad and lonely Princess Pea. They discover that the queen Roscuro killed, was Princess Pea's mother. Roscuro makes a plan to befriend Princess Pea and become her friend. The plan backfires, and Despereaux has a chance to save the princess's life, and to save a kingdom.moreless

The New York Times Manohla Dargis

A pleasantly immersive, beautifully animated, occasionally sleepy tale.

  • 70

    Los Angeles Times

A rare creature, not only for the handmade look and subtlety of its computer-generated imagery but also for its irony-free embrace of once-upon-a-time storytelling.

    Variety Justin Chang

This graphically well-rendered kidpic is less crass and mouthy than many recent feature-length toons, but also more sluggish and ungainly as it tries to approximate DiCamillo's sin...
