The Talented Mr. Ripley is a psychological thriller film directed by Anthony Minghella adapted from a Patricia Highsmith novel of the same name that centers on Tom Ripley (Matt Damon), a young man talented in the art of manipulation, as he integrates himself in the life of Dickie Greenleaf (Jude Law), a lackluster playboy of an heir. When Greenleaf's father (James Rebhorn) mistakes Ripley as a friend of his son, he is sent to Italy in a bid to convince Dickie to take up a serious life. Not one to miss an opportunity, Ripley finds himself in Italy quickly ingratiating himself into the vacationing group, including his beautiful girlfriend Marge (Gwyneth Paltrow) and his contemptuous friend Freddie (Philip Seymour Hoffman). Things though do not seem to go as plans when Dickie realizes his new "friend" is not as he says and when Ripley manages to dispose of Dickie out at sea, he begins to slowly become Dickie Greenleaf. Considered an intelligent thriller by Roger Ebert, The Talented Mr. Ripley is considered one of the first showcases of both Jude Law and Matt Damon's talents as film actors.
