The Tao of Steve is a romantic comedy that features age-old wisdom and new age attitude. Dex (Donal Logue) is a thirty-something kindergarten teacher who has developed his own set of life laws. Incorporating aspects of Buddhism, Taoism and the rules of Steve McQueen movies, Dex has come up with the Tao of Steve. The rules are simple: never let a girl know what you're after, display a feat of heroism in front of her, then leave her wanting more. The system has turned out flawless so far, leaving Dex with a carefree lifestyle of bros, beers and lots of sex. That is until his ten-year college reunion, where he meets Syd (Greer Goodman). Dex's system does not work on Syd and makes him begin to rethink his entire lifestyle. Can Dex retool his own personal brand of mysticism and achieve bliss with Syd? Watch this 2000 film, directed by Jenniphr Goodman, to find out.

Metacritic Score

  • 100

    Los Angeles Times Kevin Thomas

A constant, idiosyncratic pleasure that leaves us eager to see what the Goodmans and Logue will do next.

  • 75

    Chicago Sun-Times Roger Ebert

One of the things I like about the movie is the wit of its dialogue, the way sentences and conversations coil with confidence up to a conclusion that is totally unexpected.

  • 70

The New York Times A.O. Scott

Can't redeem the moves toward its predictable happy ending. But the movie has a protagonist who has a great time getting there.
