The Third Man, directed by Carol Reed, is a 1949 film noir. Pulp novelist Holly Martins (Joseph Cotten) travels to Vienna to meet his friend Harry Lime (Orson Welles) and start a new job. When he arrives at Harry's apartment, he learns that Harry was killed by a truck while crossing the street and that his funeral is being held that day. Holly rushes to the cemetery, where he notices a beautiful young mourner. After the service, Major Calloway (Trevor Howard), a British police officer, takes Holly out for a drink and reveals that Harry was a notorious racketeer and murderer. Holly, in disbelief, punches Calloway. Later, Holly meets Baron Kurtz (Ernst Deutsch), who tells him that he witnessed Harry's death and that Harry asked him to protect Holly and Anna Schmidt (Alida Valli), the woman at the funeral. Holly meets Anna, who was Harry's lover. The two decide that Harry's death was not an accident, but as they uncover an increasingly complex conspiracy, their lives are in ever greater danger.
