2009
Rating:
PG-13
The Time Traveler's Wife is a story of love's struggle in the strangest of circumstances. Henry (Eric Bana) is involved in a devastating car accident as a child, with his mother being killed as a result. Henry survives the accident by actually traveling through time, moving two weeks into the past, where an older version of himself appears to help him. As Henry grows older, he continues to travel through time, into the past and future, although he has no control over his traveling. Along the way, he meets Clare (Rachel McAdams), who has apparently known Henry for most of her life. She sees him as her closest friend, and they soon develop a romantic relationship. As they grow even closer, Henry's time-traveling disorder becomes an increasingly troubling problem. Clare must deal with Henry's sudden disappearances for varying stretches of time, and Henry must suffer through missing a great deal of his time with the love of his life. The Time Traveler's Wife is a romance that defies both science and the odds.moreless

Metacritic Score

  • 70

    Variety Justin Chang

May not make a lick of sense, but it does make for fairly irresistible nonsense.

  • 50

    Los Angeles Times

When the film's fate rests on the alchemy of its stars, you really don't want to get that wrong. But here, chemistry is a problem, and it proves a significant one.

  • 40

The New York Times Manohla Dargis

Often ridiculous, awkward, unsatisfying and dour melodramatic adaptation.
