The Tragedy of Macbeth is a dark and violent interpretation of Shakespeare's dramatic work about a Scottish war veteran who becomes King when he kills the current ruler. When a trio of witches (Maisie MacFarquhar, Elsie Taylor, and Noelle Rimmington) prophesize that Scottish lord Macbeth (Jon Finch) will become king of Scotland, he ambitiously entertains the notion. At the constant urging of his wife Lady Macbeth (Francesca Annis), the lord and famed war hero is compelled to see his way to the crown by murdering the existing monarch, King Duncan (Nicholas Selby), assuming the throne from the previous ruler. But he soon finds his less than admirable means of acquiring his position comes with a litany of trouble. As his wife, fueled by incessant guilt, slowly descends into madness, Macbeth finds himself in the midst of a bloody power struggle, as his efforts to cover up his wrongdoings are matched by Macbeth's orphaned sons seeking vengeance for their father's killing. Roman Polanski directs this horrific, gore filled take on one of the most innately sinister and intense Shakespearean dramas.moreless
