The True Story of Jesse James

Movie Summary

Director:
Nicholas Ray
Released:
1957
Rating:

The True Story of Jesse James is a nuanced retelling of the famous gunslinger's life. Directed by Nicholas Ray, famed director of Rebel Without a Cause and Johnny Guitar, The True Story of Jesse James stars Robert Wagner as the notorious bankrobber during his career as a criminal through his attempted retirement. This 1957 film is a balanced, nuanced look at James. The film explores his close relationship with his brother Frank (Jeffrey Hunter) as the two entered a life of crime and formed the James Gang. The story is told mostly in flashbacks while Jesse and Frank are hiding out after a botched robbery in Northfield, MN, when the rest of their gang is murdered. Director Ray does not portray Jesse and Frank as cold-blooded killers or victims of circumstance. Rather, he tries to portray the various emotions and motivations that led the brothers to a life of crime. The True Story of Jesse James is a revisionist Western of the highest caliber.moreless
