The Truth about Cats & Dogs is a romantic comedy that was released in 2006 and directed by Michael Lehmann. Dr. Abby Barnes (Janeane Garofalo) is a veterinarian who hosts a popular radio show "The Truth about Cats & Dogs." On air Abby gives pet owners helpful advice about their pet dilemmas. One such issue led Abby to meet Brian (Ben Chaplin). Ben was instantly smitten with Abby when he spoke with her on air. He tries to convince Abby to meet him on a blind date. Abby plays along with no intentions to fall through on the date. When Brian asks Abby what she looked like, her insecurities took over and she described her beautiful supermodel neighbor Noelle (Uma Thurman). Noelle is a gorgeous and a great friend. However, her intelligence is nowhere near Abby's. When Abby doesn't fall through on meeting Brian his resilience brings him to her studio. Here Noelle is mistaken as Dr. Abby Barnes and Abby begs her to play along. Quickly, Noelle falls for Brian. Was the connection Abby and Brian felt strong enough to break through the deception? Or, will Brian be so happy with Noelle's looks that the connection he felt won't matter?moreless

Metacritic Score

  • 90

The New York Times Janet Maslin

Ms. Garofalo, in a lovely, winning performance, gives Abby lots of heart while also making defensive snappishness a big part of her charm.

    Los Angeles Times Jack Mathews

From the moment we meet Abby, whimsically soothing her callers, we're turned into lap dogs, ready to follow her -- ready to follow Garofalo -- anywhere.

    Variety Brian Lowry

What really makes The Truth About Cats & Dogs special in places however, is Garofalo's dry, self-effacing wit and Thurman's ditzy, old-style Hollywood glamour.
