The Umbrellas of Cherbourg (French Language, No Subtitles) is a melodic movie recited almost entirely in song. The movie was made in 1964 by enigmatic French filmmaker Jacques Demy and stars Catherine Deneve and Nino Castelnuovo. Seventeen year old Genevieve (Catherine Deneve) and her mother run an umbrella shop in a small town outside of Normandy, France called Cherbourg. She has fallen in love with a handsome 20 year old mechanic named Guy (Nino Castelnuovo) who, likewise, is head over heals for Genevieve. Unfortunately, he is drafted for war one day and leaves Cherbourg for 2 years. However, the night before he leaves, Guy and Genevieve make love and she becomes pregnant with his child. Time passes and Genevieve never receives any news from Guy. Desperate for a husband who will help raise her child, she marries another local man named Roland Cassard (Marc Michel). When Guy returns from war due to an injury, he is rudely awakened by how things have changed in Cherbourg. He painfully observes how Genevieve has a new life: She is now married to a rich gem dealer and is seemingly over her feelings for him. Are Genevieve and Guy destined to be?moreless
