The Union: The Business Behind Getting High is a documentary film that investigates the ways in which the legalization of marijuana could benefit society. The film takes a comprehensive approach in supporting its theory by interviewing people in all kinds of business - from marijuana growers to politicians, economists to doctors. The creators of the film, Adam Scorgie and Brett Harvey, posit that the drug itself is not harmful, and that all crime surrounding sales and trafficking of marijuana is only due to the fact that it is prohibited. A history of marijuana and why it is prohibited is also introduced and juxtaposed against an era during which alcohol was prohibited in the United States, also known as Prohibition. The film was only released in film festivals, most likely due to the nature of its content. However, The Union has won several accolades and awards including Outstanding Documentary Feature at the Winnipeg International Film Festival of 2007 and Best Editing at the Rhode Island International Film Festival.moreless
